Genre: Military Sci-fi

Length: 80k / 8 hours

Basic Information

Legionnaire is the first installment in the Galaxy's Edge series, co-authored by Nick Cole and Jason Anspach. This hard military sci-fi series is comprised from a total of 9 volumes, each coming in at about 80-90k words in length or 9 hours for the audio-book versions.

Alongside this main sequence of novels, the authors have also created several more works within this fictional universe. Most notable of which are Galaxy's Edge: Savage Wars - a prequel series, Galaxy's Edge: season 2 - the direct sequel to the Galaxy's Edge series, Tyrus Rechs: Contracts & Terminations - a character spin-off series, and a couple more standalone titles.

Structure and Story

Much like the series itself, Legionnaire is a hard military sci-fi novel. Perhaps even more so than some of its sequels. It's storytelling structure is centered around a single point-of-view character narration, presented from the first person's perspective and present tense. In this regard the novel is quite similar to the Frontlines series by Marko Kloss. If you've read any of those books you should already be familiar with this style of storytelling. Although with Legionnaire Nick Cole and Jason Anspach also included a couple short-story like chapters. In contrast to the rest of the novel, these segments feature less prominent characters in the story and are presented from the third person perspective and past tense.

As far as plot goes, Legionnaire is quite simple and straight forward. The entirety of novel covers the story Sgt. Chunn and Victory company, a unit of elite warriors assigned to a diplomatic envoy mission on a backwards planet near the edge of the Galactic Empire. Sure enough, the situation goes sideways in a big way and the soldiers are left to fight for their lives on a world full of hostiles. While at its core the novel's story might be simple in construction, this isn't to say it isn't worth reading. What it lacks in character and plot depth, it makes up in good-old heart-pumping action centered fun and a rich universe filled with alien creatures, mesmerizing landscapes and a seemingly bottomless political cesspool. The last of which is a key driver of events to come in later novels.

Sub-genre Breakdown

Genre wise you can expect to see tons of action on your read-through. This is a military novel after all. I'd say maybe about 60% of the novel is combat focused, so get ready to kick-back and enjoy the explosion filled spectacle that is Legionnaire combat.

What remains of the novel is made up mostly of dramatic elements which serve to tie together the action sections, while the world-building is focused most on setting up future installments in the series. There's also a hint of suspense sprinkled throughout the book. Especially towards the very end there is a thriller like segment, but I don't want to spoil to much in this review.

Ratings and Conclusions

If you couldn't tell by now, I personally really enjoyed this novel. I loved it so much, that right now I'm almost at the end of Galactic Outlaws, the second book in this series.

Sure, Legionnaire might not have the deepest characters or plot. It can be fun getting to know the ins and outs of a protagonist from start to finish of their journey or trying to piece together who the mysterious baddie in a story might be. But right now, that's not what I was looking for nor needed. With the stress of university exams pilling up, my brain can't interpret anything more complex than a blaster-bolt dusting an alien insurgent.

So yeah, if you're in the mood for some action-packed fun set in a rich sci-fi universe, I wholeheartedly recommend you pick up Legionnaire. If however, you'd like a military novel that's more character focused, I suggest you check out my review of Terms of Enlistment by Marko Kloss.
